Check your calendar now! Days are getting shorter and you need to plan your Christmas vacation.

Have you already decided where to go? Have you found a great place to stay?

Planning your own vacation lets you have more control over time, activities, and costs, and I have some suggestions for you.

December is the most ideal time to have a trip and stay in Berlin. It is also the best time when you can indulge in the Holiday spirit of Christmas markets, mulled wine, lit-up trees and many more things this city has to offer.

Here are some activities during Christmas season in Berlin you might want to experience!

During Christmas season, Berlin is an extra popular travel-destination because of its Christmas markets where you can buy unique products and there are plenty of food stalls. There are many manufacturers from all over the world to show their talents, skills and oversell themselves in the middle of Berlin just to show people what they can offer.

The five of the most popular markets in Berlin are:

  1. Weihnachtszauber at the Gendarmenmarkt
  2. Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus
  3. Wintertraum am Alexa (incl. fair)
  4. Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz
  5. Weihnachtsmarkt am Gedächtniskirche

Although some other Christmas markets in Berlin are for free, the Weihnachtszauber costs 1 Euro entrance. But this is a very small investment if you want to enjoy a nice Christmas Markets in Berlin. If you really do not want to pay entrance: During weekdays entrance is for free until 14.00 (except from 24,25,26 and 31 December). Because it can get pretty crowded on this Christmas-market, it might be a good idea anyway to visit during these hours. By the way: Dogs are not allowed on this Christmas market.

Winters in Berlin is an extra ordinary season especially those who loves outdoor activities like ice-skating. There are several ice-skating rinks all over Berlin, with the most popular ones at the Neptunbrunnen near Alexanderplatz and Postdamer Platz. Ice skates can be rented for 2.50 Euros.

Here are some of the popular ice-skating rinks in Berlin

  1. Horst-Dohm Ice Stadium, Charlottenburg
  2. Lankwitz, Steglitz
  3. Eisstadion im Sportpark, Neukölln
  4. Müggelseeterrassen, Köpenick
  5. Ice Rink on Alexanderplatz, Mitte
  6. Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz, Mitte

During December 21-24 the popular Christmas film festival in Berlin is truly amazing. It’s a 4-day film festival features independent international films in one of the oldest movie theaters in Germany, the Moviemiento Kino at Kottbusser Damm 22, Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Go sliding in the snow. Once the snow sticks around, find the nearest park with a nice hill. Volkspark Friedrichshain, Victoria Park and Teufelsberg are popular locations to take a slide ride. You can even rent a slide at several locations in Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and Kreuzberg.

From November to January the Botanical Garden in Berlin turns into a brightly colored winter fairyland with illuminations, magic woods and light sculptures. Inspired by “Christmas in Kew” in England, Christmas Garden Berlin invites visitors to a relaxing and enchanting stroll in Berlin’s Botanical Garden. For almost eight weeks the two kilometres round tour features over a million light spots, colourful illuminations and Christmas-themed 3D figures all over the grounds.

“If you’re looking for a place to spend Christmas with, Berlin is highly recommended! There are lot of activities that you can enjoy with family and friends. Berlin is one of the best cities in the world and it’s particularly special at Christmas time.”
